What to Consider Before Choosing a Psychedelic Retreat

1. Who Are the Facilitators?

Your guides matter—a lot. You’ll be entering a vulnerable state of consciousness, and you need to know you’re in good hands.

Ask yourself:

  • Are the facilitators licensed mental health professionals?

  • Do they have trauma-informed training?

  • Do they specialize in working with women or specific populations?

  • Do they offer preparation and integration support?

At our retreats, both Heather and I are licensed therapists with over 40 years of combined experience. We specialize in women’s mental health, life transitions, and trauma support. We’re among the first certified psychedelic-assisted therapists in the U.S.—and we believe deeply in holding a safe, sacred space for healing.

2. What Type of Dosing Is Offered?

Different retreats offer different approaches to medicine. Understanding dosing options will help you know what kind of experience you're walking into.

Here’s a general guide:

  • Microdose: Subtle mood lift, gentle exploration

  • Moderate dose: Emotional openness, insight, personal reflection

  • Macrodose: Deep inner work, trauma healing, potential mystical experiences

  • Heroic dose (5+ grams): Intense journeying, ego dissolution, full surrender

What we’ve learned: One well-supported moderate to macrodose journey is more than enough for most women. Too many journeys in a short span can be overstimulating, physically draining, and emotionally overwhelming.

3. How Are You Supported? (AKA: Set and Setting)

Healing requires more than just a substance—it requires the right environment.

Consider:

  • Will you journey alone or in a group setting?

  • Are there private, quiet spaces for your experience?

  • Is there easy access to a restroom?

  • Is emotional and spiritual preparation provided beforehand?

In our retreats, each guest has a private, comfortable space to journey. As highly empathic beings, women often absorb others' emotions, which is why we avoid large, communal journey settings. Group time happens before and after the journey, when connection is most nourishing.

4. Is the Retreat Designed Specifically for Women?

Many women find they feel safer and go deeper in women-only spaces.

Think about:

  • Will you feel comfortable being emotionally open around mixed genders?

  • Does the retreat address women’s specific life phases—motherhood, midlife, aging, identity shifts?

Our approach is women-centered by design. From careful guest screening to thoughtfully structured integration, our retreats create a container where women can let go, show up fully, and connect with others walking similar paths.

5. Is Integration Included?

The insights from your journey are just the beginning. Integration is how you bring those insights back into your daily life.

Ask:

  • Will you receive support in making sense of your experience?

  • Is there post-retreat guidance or coaching?

  • Do the facilitators help you turn revelations into real change?

We offer integration both during the retreat and after. Our follow-up support two weeks after your return helps you cement your insights and take aligned action in your life.

Bonus Considerations

Want an even deeper healing experience? Look for retreats that offer:

  • Somatic work (movement, body-based therapy)

  • Ceremony and ritual (to connect with the sacred)

  • Connection to nature (forest bathing, ocean views, wildlife encounters)

  • Nourishing food (your body is healing too)
